Prof. Kitchener graduated from the University of Queensland in 1985 and subsequently trained in general practice, public health, aviation medicine, diving medicine and tropical medicine. He completed a Master of Public Health in 1994 and later obtained doctorates in Public Health and Medicine.
Much of his early career was spent with the Australian Defence Force, where he developed extensive experience in preventive medicine and the health challenges associated with international deployment. His work took him to Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste, Bougainville and the Middle East, where he was involved in managing infectious disease outbreaks, assessing health risks and providing medical care in challenging environments.
International Experience and Research
Prof. Kitchener has made significant contributions to the prevention of tropical diseases, particularly malaria, dengue fever and Japanese encephalitis. While working with the Australian Defence Force, he investigated malaria and dengue outbreaks in Timor-Leste and Bougainville and contributed to the development and evaluation of new antimalarial medicines.
He subsequently worked in vaccine research in Cambridge, UK, where he led clinical development work on a Japanese encephalitis vaccine and contributed to research on vaccines against dengue fever, yellow fever and other infectious diseases. He has also advised the WHO on vaccine development.
His research and practical experience provide a strong foundation for advising travellers about vaccination, malaria prevention and the health risks associated with international travel.
